Richard Donner's storming horror thriller about the anti-christ's successful first step toward world domination, is a shocking exploration of good versus evil.
In The Omen, Gregory Peck stars as an American Ambassador living in Rome, Italy, whose chid dies at birth and is replaced, with his knowledge, by another child in order to placate his wife, Kathy, played by Lee Remick. The Number of the Beast is 666Shortly after the birth, he returns to Great Britain with his wife as Ambassador to the Court of St. James. His domestic bliss is cut short when Damien’s nanny commits suicide in mysterious circumstances and a Priest (Patrick Troughton) reveals the secret of his child’s birth. A photographer (David Warner) who has been chronicling the child’s development for the press, claims his photographs predict a series of gruesome deaths linked to the arrival of the anti-christ. The two men travel to Italy to investigate and uncover the truth behind the death of Thorn’s real son. During the trip, Thorn discovers that his wife has been seriously injured in an accident and rushes home. Ambassador Thorn then gradually begins to piece together the reality of the situation he finds himself in and absorb the horrifying truth about his son’s legacy. But can he really take his son’s life to save the world? 5 Facts About the Omen.1. The script was originally called ‘The Anti-Christ’ and then ‘The Birthmark’ before it was changed to The Omen during filming. 2. The film was plagued by a series of accidents, including Gregory Peck’s plane being struck by lightning and a serious car smash involving lead members of the crew. 3. Damien was originally to die at the end of the film but it was thought more frightening if he survived. 4. Composer Jerry Goldsmith won an Oscar for his score; his wife, Carol Goldsmith, performed a vocal version of the love theme which was thought unsuitable for the movie but features on the soundtrack album as ‘The Piper Dreams’. 5. Charlton Heston, Roy Scheider and William Holden, who starred in the sequel, Damien: Omen II, turned down the role of Ambassador Thorn before it was accepted by Gregory Peck.
