Watching scary movies on Halloween is something many look forward to every year. There are so many to choose from! Here are some ways to narrow down the choices.
What's the best scary movie? Which is the absolute scariest? Here are some of the best!
Zombie Movies
"When there is no more room in hell, the dead shall walk the Earth." This line from Dawn of the Dead (2004) pretty much sums up the zombie sub-genre. Enjoy these zombie flicks:
- Night of the Living Dead. The Dead films have defined this sub-genre. The first film was released in 1968 to stunned audiences who watched zombies feast on the flesh of humans in black and white. Since then, there have been many sequels and remakes, notably, Dawn of the Dead, which was a sequel in 1978 and then remade in 2004.
- 28 Days Later. An English film released in 2003 about a man who wakes up after an accident to find that the streets of London are vacant...except for a few folks who have managed to survive and a bunch of crazed zombies. Unlike the traditional slow moving zombies, the zombies in this film run and fast! Lots of scary moments and tension.
- The Evil Dead. Sam Raimi's 1981 film has become a cult classic and spawned several sequels. 5 friends travel to a cabin and accidentally release evil spirits that turn them into zombies one by one. Funny at moments and definitely creepy!
Slasher Films
Slasher films generally focus on a group of teenagers or young adults who are isolated somehow--at a cabin in the woods,at camp--and are hunted one-by-one for one reason or another. Here are a few of the most popular slasher films!
- Friday the 13th. Camp Crystal Lake is run by hard drinking, horny young adults who were too busy being bad to save camper Jason Voorhies from a watery grave. Years later, a new crop of camp counselors is stalked by someone seeking revenge. So far, there have been 8 sequels!
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A van carrying 5 teenagers travels through a particularly isolated part of Texas stopping to visit their grandparent's old house, now abandoned...and adjacent to property owned by a totally insane family that kills and eats people. Classic and scary!
- HalloweenAlmost any 70's or early 80's film starring Jamie Lee Curtis will fall into this category. Michael Meyers murders one sister and returns 15 years later to murder the other one. Some of her friends get in the way and the rest is history! There have been many sequels and a remake released in 2007.
Ghost Stories
Unlike Casper, the ghosts in these films aren't friendly!
- The Ring. A young woman dies and her aunt investigates the bizarre circumstances surrounding her death and an allegedly deadly videotape. Adapted from the original Japanese film Ringu.
- Poltergeist. Little CarolAnn gets sucked into the television set by some ghosts who want her young spirit. Oh, and trees some alive, a stuffed clown attacks a little boy and one guy claws his face off.
- The Grudge. Another Japanese remake about a house haunted by a woman and her child who were murdered in a fit of rage. Very creepy and tense!
Whichever movie you choose this Halloween season, remember, it's all about fun! Happy Halloween!
