If you’ve been driving all day and you’re tired or lost why not pull in at a bed and breakfast, catch up on some sleep and leave refreshed in the morning? Director Michael Leutwyler can offer a few reasons as to why it’s not such a good idea.
Carrying the tagline “It’s like a Bad Horror Movie Only Worse” Dead & Breakfast is sure to make any horror enthusiast smile. This redneck zombie flick stars Erik Palladino, Bianca Lawson, Ever Carradine, Brent David Fraser, Portia de Rossi, Gina Philips, Oz Perkins and Jeremy Sisto.
Six friends and strangers share an RV ride to Galveston for a friend’s wedding. Johnny, played by Oz Perkins, takes a wrong turn getting the group lost. Reluctantly, they decide to stay at a bed and breakfast in the town of Lovelock. By morning the owner and chef are both dead and the group is suspected of the crimes.
The Sherriff (Jeffery Dean Morgan) has his partner Enus, Mark Kelly, watch the suspects and confines them to the B&B. There is another suspect, a drifter, who is being kept behind bars because of his strange ways. Brent David Fraser plays the meditative and sarcastic drifter. With their RV keys in the hands of the law the group has to deal with missing their friend’s wedding and decide to get to know the town’s people a little better.
Kate, David, Sara, Melody and Christian ask the Sherriff’s permission to go into the town for awhile and not long later all but Kate (Bianca Lawson), who went to the station to call the bride, are drinking away their sorrows at the local bar.
Johnny is bored at the inn and decides to check things out. When he accidently knocks a small box off a desk he releases the Kuman Thong, a demon curse, which possesses Johnny and one by one, the rest of the town’s residents turning them into zombies.
The domino effect takes over the small town and quickly reaches the bar. A blood fest breaks out and Christian, played by Jeremy Sisto, loses his head. Literally. Kate and the Sherriff show up and the group rushes to find answers. It doesn’t take long for them to realize that everything they are trying to understand is the reason the drifter is in Lovelock.
The group takes on the mob of ghouls and wind up trapping themselves in the bed and breakfast. Kelly, Portia de Rossi, builds weapons for the attack and within minutes the house is boarded.
The only part of this movie that is better than the gore, guts and redneck humour is the on screen music. Throughout the film Zach Selwyn (Randall Keith Randall), Evan Helmuth, John Oszajca and Zac Starkovic (Harmonica Bob) are the Hillbilly Hellcats. Each scene that requires a little something extra is made even more slap stick by these four musical zombies.
Leutwyler created a comedy horror that has the ability to attract horror, comedy and cult fans. “Lots of fun, lots of gore... sure to attain some type of cult status” was The Horror Channel’s response to the film’s 2004 release.
Dead & Breakfast is good for a little adrenalin and a whole lot of laughs.
