Everyone who loves horror films all have their own opinions, and no one's list ever seems to be the same. Horror fans will never agree on an undisputed greatest horror film of all time. This list consists of some of the best ever, and were all extremely original films at the time of their conception. In addition, they have withstood the test of time, and still have the same effect they had when originally conceived, if not even more haunting now.
The Exorcist- Directed by William R. Friedkin, and based on William Peter Blatty's 1971 best-selling novel, The Exorcist was a movie way ahead of its time, and still has the ability to scare the hell out of people. The story of a little girl who is possessed by who else, but the devil himself. When it opened in 1973, people were shocked, and many left the theaters before the end of the film in utter disbelief. The Exorcist was nominated for several Academy Awards and is one of the highest grossing horror films of all time.
A Nightmare on Elm Street- Everyone agrees Freddy Krueger became a little corny and even comical towards the end of his reign, but no one can deny the impact the original A Nightmare on Elm Street had. A dead, horribly burned child killer, who murders teenagers in their dreams? Pretty damn scary. Wes Craven's brilliance is still evident today in this timeless classic.
The Devil's Rejects- Although many might not consider this a tradtional horror movie, it is sick, disturbing, and utterly frightening. This is the most recent movie in this list, but has earned a spot based on its originality, concept, and shock-value. 21st Century Horror Icon Rob Zombie defintely stepped up his creativity game on this one. Zombie's ability to make us cheer for the " bad guy" and care about characters like a deranged, killer, redneck clown named Captain Spaulding is incredible.
Jaws- Yes, Jaws is defintely a horror film. A two-ton great-white shark ripping through beach-goers at will is certainly horrifying in my book. It is scary even to fathom coming into contact with such a creature. Steven Speilberg made an entire generation afraid to go in the water, which showed his versatility and solidified his genius.
The Shining- Legendary director Stanley Kubrick has made some incredible films in his day: 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, and Full Metal Jacket. But his finest work quite-possibly is The Shining. Although Horror Legend Stephen King might disagree, this could be the best horror film ever made. From the crazed father Jack Torrance, to the spirits of the twin girls, to the image of a wave of blood crashing down the hotel hallway, this movie had all the best ingredients of a chilling haunted house story.
