Lets face it, all horror movie viewers already know that one day the world will be overrun by zombies and humans will be on the run. So, it's important to realize that we need to prepare ourselves now for the inevitable zombie holocaust.
Luckily for us, we have been bombarded with subtle clues in preparation for this moment. So, the first thing that you must ask yourself is, "what type of zombie movie am I in?" This question will establish all of your actions, weapons, and strategy. Keep in mind that it is always best to travel in a group and headshots will destroy the zombie.
Assuming that, similar to cinema, zombies become smarter over time, the early stages of the zombie holocaust will be spent running and hiding. Much like George A. Romero's original thriller, Night of the Living Dead, or the equally epic Shaun of the Dead, the onslaught will be staved off through clever strategy. This zombie, slow-footed and equally slow-witted, relies on natural survival instincts. A proper weapon would include a shovel, a baseball bat, a small handgun, or your hands.
Because the zombie will lurch and grab, a short range, handheld weapon for fending off attacks and for making running room would be best. This method would buy you the most time and allow for a quick getaway. From here, clever planning will allow you to make your way from one safe spot to another.
If, by means of evolution, your encounter is with a smarter, faster, and stronger zombie, the means for survival must be adapted. As illustrated in films such as Dawn of the Dead and Dead/Alive, the zombie will move in packs. Because they still depend on their most basic survival instincts, the zombie will take advantage of a gang style attack. As a survivalist, evaluating this type of zombie becomes tricky.
Since they will be lumped in a group, you must be cautious of alerting the whole gang of your whereabouts. However, since the zombie has evolved into a more adept hunter, your strategy must still be survival. This of course means that you should always be on your feet and on the run. Of course, don't forget to take advantage of your ability to climb.
Because the zombie will move a little quicker and use his strength more to his advantage, a proper weapon would be one that will hurt the zombie, as well as buy you some running room. For the most part, a bonk to the head with a shovel will only enrage the zombie more. So, using something like an axe, a shotgun, or possibly a car to run through a big group of zombies would be your best bet.
If you find yourself in the midst of a full zombie assault, like in Day of the Dead or I am Legend, you are in trouble. The zombie will become very human-like and almost cognoscente of their actions. This certainly spells trouble for the survivor, as the zombie will have greatly increased speed, mobility and strength. Evolution has taken the enemy to a human like status and given the zombie faux-feelings and responses.
Keep in mind that, while things may seem grim, your arsenal of weapons is greatly upgraded for this predicament. Because the zombie is the culmination of every living nightmare known to man, you most prepare appropriately. When choosing a weapon, you must keep in mind that you must defend from both short range and long range attacks.
Because the zombie will be hunting you, and be able to strike without warning, you must always be on your toes, counter-hunting. The best combination of weapons for this situation would be an assault rifle, a handheld gun, and a sword. Because the zombie will attack you at variable points, the swords could be used reduce mobility and buy some running room. The assault rifle grants you the ability to stalk the zombie or to take him out before he sees you.
The overall base of survival will be your ability to move around with greater safety. Unfortunately, the zombie will attack and attempt to cripple any mode of transportation you use, so you must think big (like the bus from Dawn of the Dead or Land of the Dead). Possibly the best mode of transportation would be a fire truck. You will have increased protection and speed, as well as the ability to run over mass amounts of zombies without damaging the truck. An added bonus is the ability to use the fire hose to deflect the zombies in the same manner as police did with rioting hippies!
Good luck...
