The covenant is a supernatural thriller about four boys descended from a long line of witches, and the trouble that ensues with the arrival of the long lost 'fifth son'.

From the directors of Underworld comes this supernatural thriller, starring Steven Strait, Laura Ramsey and Sebastian Stan, a story about four teenage warlocks, fighting to protect the covenant and save their own powers.

The Covenant Overview

Four 17-year-old high school boys share a 300-year-old secret, that they are warlocks, descended from a long line of witches. They are individually powerful, but will become more so on their 18th birthdays, when they ‘ascend’. With each use of power, part of their life force is lost, and an abuse of power will cause irreversible and extreme aging.

When the fifth warlock, another descendent of the same 17th century witches, once thought to be dead, appears with revenge and a view to stealing all of the four boys powers and destroying the covenant, the four must stop him before he kills them and their loved ones.

The Covenant Review

The covenant is a thrilling story that delves into the dark side of witchcraft and the ramifications of the abuse of power. The main character Caleb (Strait) begins a romance with the new girl at school, Sarah (Ramsey) who ends up as the main target for the evil Chase Collins (Stan). Chase is another new student to the school, who forms a friendship with the four, as a way of getting close to them. Soon after they realize that Chase is the fifth son of the Ipswich witches, and his goal is to steal their powers.

As the story unfolds, it provides a good back-story as to the events leading up to the finale, and some insight into Chase’s motivations. Caleb as the most mature one of the group of four, and the one nearest to his 18th birthday, where he will ‘ascend’, needs to fight off Chase before he kills off his family, friends, and his new girlfriend.

Many of the male characters look too old to be playing high school boys, and perhaps a university setting may have been better. There are plenty of creepy and scary scenes to make the viewer jump in their seats, and the special effects are visually exciting. Overall, an entertaining and somewhat scary movie, best watched with the lights out.
