For those who haven't read the book, a little background into the history of the Cullen family will enhance this film's enjoyment.

The vampires in this film are not like any others. They are not harmed by garlic or crosses. They can venture out in daylight, and sparkle in direct sunlight. They don’t sleep in coffins, in fact they never sleep. Their superhuman strength and powers make them seem more like superheroes than traditional vampires.

Bella Swan

When Bella’s mother remarries, Bella, played by Kristen Stewart, decides to spend some time with her father in Forks, Washington. At the local high school, she meets Edward Cullen, who turns out to be a vampire.

The Cullens

Edward Cullen—the hero of Twilight is a 108 years old vampire who looks 17. He was changed by Dr. Cullen in Chicago in 1918 when his dying mother begged the doctor to save her son - who was also dying of Spanish influenza.

Dr. Carlisle Cullen—the head of the family is over 300 years old, but looks to be in his late 20s. Carlisle was born in London in the 1640s and was the son of an Angelican pastor. His compassion drove him to become a doctor. Once a hunter of witches and vampires, he became a vampire after being attacked by one.

Esme Cullen--Dr. Cullen’s wife, the mother figure in the family, was changed into a vampire by Carlisle after a failed suicide attempt following her infant son’s death. She was born in Columbus, Ohio in the late 1800s and was around 26 at the time of her death.

Emmett Cullen--Rosalie’s husband. Rosalie discovered him after he’d been mauled by a bear. Emmett was born in Gatlinburg, Tennessee in 1935, and looks around 20. He big, strong jock of a vampire.

Rosaile--a beautiful young female vampire who was born in Rochester, New York in 1915. She was raped and left in the streets to die. She is around 18 and possesses extreme beauty. She is hostile toward Bella.

Alice Cullen--A hip and cool young vampire who can sometimes see the future. She appears to be around 19. She was born in 1901 in Biloxi, Mississippi, where she was committed to an asylum because of her premonitions. The tracker James was going to kill her so a sympathetic vampire who worked at the asylum changed her to save her.

Jasper Hale- was born in Texas. He was a confederate soldier in 1861, and was turned into a vampire in 1863 by a woman vampire named Maria when he was 20. He joined into the Cullen family with Alice, who had a premonition of their meeting.

The Nomads

There are nomadic vampires who wander in little groups or families. In Twilight, the Cullens meet up with the nomadic trio of James, Victoria and Laurent, who cause trouble. James is an experienced tracker and he focuses on Bella for sport and wants to kill her. His red-haired mate, Victoria, is prepared to help him find her. Laurent, an olive-skinned vampire, leaves because he does not approve of their tracking Bella.
